Browsing Yesterdays
All images on Yesterdays are from third-party sources. Yesterdays is not a preservation system. It is a platform for exploring images across a wide variety of sources, and crowdsourcing metadata for those images. In other words, Yesterdays is meant to sit between the user and various information preservation systems, including museums and libraries.
Sources
Sources represent individual institutions, e.g. Library of Congress, where we have sourced images on Yesterdays. The images in Yesterdays are from online databases provided by these institutions.
Collections
Images from each source are organized into collections. Collections have their own pages, which show a map of georeferenced images from that collection.
What are Images?
While most images in Yesterdays are old photographs, they also include:
- drawings
- postcards
- architectural sketches
These can often be georeferenced, too, even if they do not represent reality. For example, we can place an architectural sketch on the map even if the building was never built.
